The short answer: screens don't break a teenager's executive function, but they let it atrophy. Executive function is the brain's management layer: initiating tasks, planning, holding a goal in mind, resisting impulses, tolerating boredom, shifting between activities. It's slow to develop, not finishing until the mid-twenties, and it runs on effort. It's the system that focuses on things that are not interesting.

A game requires almost none of it. The game initiates for you, plans for you, rewards every thirty seconds, and never asks you to tolerate a dull moment. What looks like impressive focus is the environment doing the executive work while the teen supplies the enthusiasm. Does heavy screen use make executive dysfunction worse?

Not by damaging the brain, as far as good evidence shows. By outsourcing the practice.

Executive function grows the way any capacity grows, through reps: sitting with boredom, starting the unappealing thing, planning an afternoon, noticing an impulse and not acting on it. A phone in the pocket quietly absorbs almost every one of those reps. Bored for eleven seconds? Absorbed. Dreading the essay? Absorbed. Awkward silence? Absorbed. Multiply by years and you get a teen with less accumulated practice at exactly the skills adolescence is supposed to build, plus a habit of routing every uncomfortable feeling to the same device.

Research adds a warning specific to this age. A large 2018 study in JAMA followed thousands of teens and found that high-frequency digital media use predicted increased ADHD-type symptoms over the following two years. Association, not proof of causation, and the authors said so. But the direction of the association is not the one anyone hoped for, and the adolescent years are precisely when the executive system is under construction.

How do we rebuild self-regulation without a tech war?

The instinct is confiscation. The problem is that confiscation is just more external regulation, and external regulation was the problem. A teen whose phone is managed entirely by parents gets zero reps of managing it themselves, which means the skill you're trying to build still isn't being built, plus now there's a war. The goal is transferring regulation inward, gradually, with scaffolding.

Return the reps in small denominations. Not "no phone until homework's done," which sets up a cliff, but structure that makes the teen do small executive lifts: they pick the start time for homework, they set the session length, they choose where the phone sits during it. Each choice is a rep. Choices they make get kept at triple the rate of rules they receive.

Make time visible from the outside. Executive dysfunction includes time blindness, and phones are time-blindness machines. Gentle elapsed-time signals ("two hours on your phone today") do for a teen's session what a clock on the wall does for a meeting. Information, not accusation. The difference in tone is the difference between a tool and a nag.

Practice boredom as an actual skill. This sounds like satire and is probably the highest-leverage rep available. Short, named, voluntary stretches with nothing: the queue, the car ride, ten minutes before bed. Boredom tolerance is upstream of task initiation, because starting a dull task requires surviving its dull first minutes.

Regulate socially before solo. Self-regulation is learned in company before it's performed alone; that's not a weakness, it's the developmental sequence.
